Breast Cancer Awareness blog header 102022 1

Being aware of your health is powerful - knowing and taking care of your breast health is an important part of a women’s overall wellness. As it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we wanted to remind all the ladies to take some time for your health.

Statistics show that many women deal with breast cancer daily. If you are one of those women, then you aren’t alone. At the Knox County Community Health Center, we strive to provide women with the guidance and medical information they need to support both their emotional and medical wellness.

Breast cancer is the most common kind of cancer among women, and chances are you know someone battling it now or who has in the past. Mammograms are the most effective way to detect breast cancer early, so it is important to get a mammogram each year, starting at the age your doctor recommends (typically around age 40) or based on family history and risk factors.

Symptoms

There are several symptoms that might help you determine if you need to see a doctor and get screened for breast cancer. Being aware is a key step. Don’t ignore any symptoms, even though they might not be cancer. The only way to know is to be checked. Early detection is key.

  • A change in the shape or size of the breast
  • Pain in any part of the breast
  • A lump in the breast or underarm
  • Nipple discharge of any kind, other than breast milk
  • Dimpling or puckering of the skin

According to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. The two greatest risk factors are being female and getting older.

What can you do?

  • Get a yearly mammogram
  • Know your family history
  • Lead a healthy lifestyle by maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol, and exercising
  • Conduct regular self-exams

Every day women are being treated for and surviving breast cancer. Early detection is key, so don’t put off that mammogram! If we can answer any questions, make a referral, or help you find a mammogram imaging center, give us a call at 740-399-8008. We can help!
