Did you know, according to the American Thyroid Association, almost 60% of those with a thyroid disease aren’t aware they have this condition? This seems to be reason enough to have your thyroid checked each year during your wellness physical at one of our health center sites.

Our Community Health Center providers want you to be as healthy as possible and understanding your thyroid can help you figure out what to do to keep it healthy.

What is your thyroid?

The small thyroid gland is found in the lower front of the neck. Its job is to make thyroid hormones that are carried throughout your body in the blood. The thyroid controls your body’s metabolism, increases heart rate, and affects how fast food, sugar, and bone loss move through the body. It’s an important endocrine organ!

Fast facts about thyroid disorders:

  • Women are more likely than men to have thyroid issues
  • Serious conditions such as infertility, cardiovascular diseases, and osteoporosis can occur if thyroid disease is not found
  • Most thyroid diseases (most are life-long) can be treated and managed with proper medical care

Warning signs

Talk with a medical professional if you have any of these unexplained symptoms. Early diagnosis is important to managing the disease.

Overactive (Hyperthyroidism) thyroid:

  • Racing heart rate
  • Anxiety
  • Palpitations
  • Insomnia
  • Weight loss with an increased appetite
  • Sweating
  • Muscle weakness

Underactive (Hypothyroidism) thyroid:

  • Fatigue
  • Cold intolerance
  • Hair loss
  • Weight gain
  • Depression
  • Can’t tolerate cold

If you think you have any of the above symptoms or feel a lump or swelling in the neck, have swollen glands, or a new and persistent cough, make an appointment with a doctor to get checked out. There are several screening blood tests that can be used to evaluate thyroid function. Treating it early is the best way to stay healthy.
