Cinco de Mayo celebration with sombreros, maracas, and cacti

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

We have fun ideas to help you celebrate the day in full festive style!

We all love a day that is celebrated with tacos, guac, and festive Hispanic culture! Cinco de Mayo is celebrated to commemorate an important battle during the Franco-Mexican War, taking place in the town of Pueblo. The Mexican army defeated the French on this day, and the battle led to traditional celebrations we now see on May 5th.

Celebrate at Home

There are many fun things you can do today to celebrate right along with your kids:

  • Read facts about Cinco de Mayo. This site even includes a sheet to print out and color.
  • We love the fun information on National Geographic as well. Nothing like getting a little history lesson in today!
  • Set the table for the festivities with bright colored plates and a tablecloth, homemade flowers, a pinata, and anything else you can find to make it festive.
  • Fix a Mexican meal. Keep it simple with tacos, chips, and salsa. Or use this kid-friendly website to find some delicious options.
  • Use this website from Parents Magazine to make maracas, chocolate chili poppers, pinatas, mocktails like agua fresca, sombreros, and more.
  • Put on some music and play Freeze Dance or musical chairs.
  • Find some fun, crafty ideas here by using supplies you already have at home. (Use them to make the table festive for dinner, too!)
  • Finish up the meal with easy to make sombrero cookies.

Of course, you can also celebrate by heading out to your favorite local Mexican restaurant!
