Not every toothache is a cavity, but they still warrant a visit to the dentist. Many times the dentist can recommend simple treatments or preventative steps to keep the pain at bay and help heal the issue. However, if it is a cavity, it is best to see the dentist sooner rather than later.

Here are some symptoms of a cavity to watch for:

  • Toothache, spontaneous pain or pain that occurs without any apparent cause
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Mild to sharp pain when eating or drinking something sweet, hot or cold
  • Visible holes or pits in your teeth
  • Brown, black or white staining on any surface of a tooth
  • Pain when you bite down

It is common that patients won’t make a trip into the office until their tooth is quite painful and a true distraction throughout their day. We want to help treat the cavity far before it becomes a problem that is affecting each and every day. Instead of waiting and presenting the threat of an infection that can spread to other teeth and the gums, watch for the symptoms above. Many times a cavity can be caught in the very early stages (like spots on the tooth’s surface or mild sensitivity).

When to give us a call:

First things first. Get your appointments set for every 6 months. Getting this regular cleaning and inspection can help us help you. We can find issues in the very early stages and even provide preventative measures like fluoride varnish and deep cleanings.

Next, if you do experience discomfort between appointments, never hesitate to call. Our staff is here and eager to help. Our goal is always to preserve your teeth and protect the health of the surrounding tissues (like your gums!).
